Gifts for People

Fred Nested Hen/Egg/Chick Dry Measuring Cups

I love these little guys on so many levels! First, they’re like those Russian matryoshka dolls, where one doll is inside another that is inside another. Hand these over to your kids and they’ll be entertained for hours! But wait! These aren’t your typical matryoshka dolls – there’s a chick inside an egg inside a hen—so as your kids play with them, they learn all about how life really works! But wait! They aren’t just a cute toy, they’re actually accurate dry-measure cups, so if you can pry them out of your kids’ hands, you can actually use them in the kitchen!

Personalized Chicken Mug

What chicken person wouldn’t want a mug with a cute chicken pic on it? This mug has an added security feature—it comes personalized with your chicken person’s name right on it, thus safeguarding it from all of those covetous chicken person wannabes.

Chicken Earrings

You probably know just the right woman who would rock these earrings. She’s got the coop in the backyard with five or six hens, each with a name and a backstory. And these little ear hens have so much personality, she’ll want to name them as well.

Egg Gathering Apron

This chicken motif apron is made to slip on before you go out to visit the girls. And there’s an abundance of little pockets for holding all those eggs!

Tee: Who Loves Chickens? This Guy!

Need a gift for a guy who loves chickens? Here you go! This tee shirt is it! Here’s hoping at least one of my gift-giving friends is reading this.

Men’s Rooster Socks

You probably know somebody who needs these socks. So put a pair in his Christmas stocking! Wait. Can you put stockings in a stocking? And what if the stockings in the stocking had stockings in them? It would be like matryoshka socks…and it could go on infinitely! Wow. I may have to spend some time doing some deep thinking about this. Anyway, I suggest they be worn with formal wear.

Stainless Steel Chicken Cookie Cutter

First you use this great cookie cutter to cut out the cookies, then you bake them, and then you get to be all creative with the decorations. What will these hens become? Rhode Island Reds? Barred Rocks? How ‘bout some green space alien chickens? Go crazy!

Gifts for Chickens

Merry Chickmas! Happy Henukkah! Here are some great gifts for your flock!

Grubblies

Grubblies are dried black soldier fly grubs and your chickens will love them! I foresee a huge future for this high protein, high calcium, environmentally positive, domestically produced chicken food. Bsf grubs turn garbage into high protein chicken food! And while every commercially available package of meal worms that I'm aware of comes from China, Grubblies are produced right here in the USA! Stay tuned for a full post in a few weeks about how amazing black soldier fly grubs are—right here on the blog! In the meantime, toss some of these delicious protein snacks to your birds. They’ll love you more than they already do!

Titan Incubators Chick Heating Plate

Baby chicks need heat. And if there’s no broody hen to provide that heat, this heater is the next best thing. Please don’t use heat lamps—not only do they suck tons of electricity, but they are potentially dangerous. They can explode and start fires. This heater sips power and is more natural—the babies can crawl under it just like they crawl under a hen’s wing. I’ve been using these heaters for several years and all the Hipster Hens that I’ve raised under this heater have fond and nostalgic memories of their chickhood. All of that being said, if you use broody hens to raise your chicks, just keep doing what you’re doing. Broody hens don’t use any electricity at all and I’m not aware of any reports of broody hens blowing up and starting fires.

Wall Mount Space Heater Panel

Whether or not you should heat your coop is an issue that divides flock keepers into two camps, and various chicken forums have seen heated exchanges (Oops, was that a pun? Sorry.) on this topic. I am personally in favor of providing a little heat to help the Hipster Hens avoid frostbitten combs and to keep their eggs from freezing. And this is what I use. This 400 watt ceramic heat panel mounts on the wall, plugs directly into a thermostat, which is provided, and the thermostat plugs directly into a standard outlet – no muss, no fuss!

Clear Plastic Egg Cartons

If you have a diverse flock like I do, your hens provide you with pretty eggs in all sorts of colors—various shades of brown, green, blue, beige, and white—a veritable rainbow! So, when you give eggs to your friends, why hand them eggs in a boring opaque carton when they can be all eye-catching and rainbowy in this clear carton? I’ve designed a custom label for my eggs which I can put inside the carton since it shows right through the top!

Hen Saddle

My rooster, Emile, sometimes gets just a little too passionate and some of the girls wind up with patches of missing feathers on their backs. This past summer both Paula the Faverolles hen and Rose Wyandotte were embarrassed by large bald spots. Hen saddles to the rescue! Not only do these garments cover up the bald spots, but they protect hens from losing more feathers due to overly enthusiastic rooster amour. And beyond that, they’re a fashion statement. Paula and Rose were proud to be the best-dressed girls in the coop!
